Carnival of souls 2002
Now, my main motivation for going to Carnival was to see only one band -Star Industry. But before I had that pleasure, I had to suffer some pain. Normally I`m quite into that kind of thing, bit this was different. That pain was the first band of the day - Serotonin. I have a feeling these guys are distinctly lacking in serotonin, as their act consisted of inane shouted vocals, a drum machine, and a very loud guitar. I was not impressed and after 20 minutes of hoping either a) they would finish their set or b) do something different, I gave in and wandered around the stalls.
The same shops were there again from the October carnival, Automaton, Blowfish, Psiclone, Cathouse, Freak, and Nightbreed. There was a good variety of clothes available at a good price, but since I usually use their websites or trundle off to Peaches there was nothing new. But to people who don`t have access to places this would have been excellent.
After the horror of the first act I was not looking forward to the next band, but Void Construct delivered. I was lured away by an excellent cyber set next door half way through their set. They were nothing new or too original but they do play good electronica music. I found this Carnival a bit strange as the place was fairly empty compared to Octobers event. Also there was a dramatic change in the music played. There was only two types on offer cyber or metal, I only heard a small amount of more traditional gothic music played during the entire thing, and that was at the end of the night in the main room. I had an excellent time as I`ve never heard such a good mix of stuff played - Das Ich, VNV, Hypnoskull, Assemblage 23, Neuroticfish, and Blutengel. This did mean that I missed Saints Of Eden. But other people did say that they played a blinding set. I`ll just have to take their word for it, sorry, my bad!
And finally, to what I`d waited for - Star Industry- who delivered an excellent set. They played the crowd brilliantly even though they were hindered slightly by a rather pissed up old goth at the front of the stage. The played a good mix of songs from the albums Velvet and Iron Dust Crush. I nearly fell about laughing when they started their cover of Roxette`s The Look. But most people were waiting for Nineties and New Millennium, then the dancefloor was heaving. Also I can`t resist a comment about the guitarists cowboy hat, now we know how Alienskin feels about them! but I thought he carried this look off rather well :)
And after that I went off for more fun with my glow sticks. Dancing with them that is, I know some of the twisted minds we have out there.
